President's Message, September, 2023

Too often we think of September as back to school, but I also like to think of it as a new beginning - sort of like the New Year.  September is the 2nd month of service for our Board of Directors.  We’ve spent the past 6 weeks, or so, working on planning for our League year-to-come.

Planning is like preparing for a road trip – just as we wouldn't embark on a journey without a map or a GPS, we shouldn't approach our goals without a well-thought-out plan.

Imagine setting out on a road trip without any idea of your destination, route, or stops along the way. You might end up lost, frustrated, and unsure of your next move. Similarly, in our personal and professional lives, a lack of planning can lead to confusion, missed opportunities, and unfulfilled objectives.

A successful road trip involves several key steps, each of which resonates with the process of achieving our goals:

  1. Define Your Destination: Just as we choose a specific place to visit during a road trip, we should have a clear understanding of our goals. Whether it's advancing in our careers, developing new skills, or making meaningful contributions to our community, a well-defined destination keeps us focused and motivated.
  2. Map Your Route: Planning the best route helps us navigate efficiently and avoid unnecessary detours. Similarly, outlining the steps needed to achieve our goals guides us toward success. Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks and create a timeline for each.
  3. Gather Resources: A road trip requires essentials like fuel, snacks, and navigation tools. Likewise, our goals demand resources such as knowledge, skills, and support. Identify what you need to succeed and gather these resources before you start your journey.
  4. Anticipate Challenges: Road trips often come with unexpected challenges like traffic or weather conditions. Similarly, our goals may encounter obstacles along the way. By anticipating potential roadblocks, you can devise contingency plans and stay adaptable.
  5. Enjoy the Journey: A road trip isn't just about reaching the destination; it's about the experiences and memories made along the way. Similarly, the path toward success is filled with learning opportunities and personal growth. Embrace the journey, celebrate milestones, and learn from setbacks.
  6. Stay On Course: During a road trip, you periodically check the map or GPS to ensure you're on the right track. Similarly, regularly review your progress toward your goals. Adjust your plan if necessary and stay committed to your objectives.
  7. Arrival and Reflection: Reaching your road trip destination is a moment of achievement. Take time to celebrate your successes, but also reflect on the journey. Similarly, when you achieve your goals, pause to acknowledge your hard work, and consider what you've learned along the way.

We’ll share more specific details for Pathfinder’s plans during our September monthly meeting, continuing to consider the same level of preparation and excitement we would for a road trip. I hope you’ll join us!

Meanwhile, here's to a month of purposeful planning and successful journeys.

Warm regards,
Karen Fitting,
Pathfinder President, 2023-2024
